Library Updates - September 2019

It’s September. Like it or not, here comes school, cooler temperatures, and everything else that screams autumn! Here at the library, we are super excited for Fall. A new month means new books, new events, and, well, new news!

First off, thank you for an incredible, out of this world Summer Reading Program. We had over 370 people participate, our biggest number ever. In total, our kids read over 100,000 minutes this summer, and our teens and adults completed over 1,000 books. Scroll down to see pictures from this summer. If you participated in our Summer Reading Program, please consider taking this quick evaluation survey. It only has four questions, and your answers will help us immensely in planning future programs.

Secondly, not only is September the start of school for many, it is also Library Card Sign-Up Month! Library cards are one of the most important school supply items, and they’re also one many families miss. Do you need a card? Stop by the library with your valid ID with your current Fruitport Village or Township address to get started.

Because it’s such a special month, we’re celebrating in a few different ways:

Is one (or both) of your Fruitport Library Cards lost or in need of repair? Visit the library from September 16 to 21 and show us your ID – we’ll set you up with a new card for free.

Do you (like ALL OF US) have fines on your account that you keep forgetting to pay? Don’t worry! Visit the library from September 23 to 28 to pay your fines, and we’ll take half-off any overdue fees on Fruitport items.

Finally, we know that this is a busy time of year, but here are a few events to put on your calendar:

We have Story Time for ages 0-6 every Tuesday at 11:00. This fall, we’ll be focusing on the alphabet - learning the letters, their sounds, and how to write them.

The Friends of the Library will be holding their Fall Book Sale September 25 to 29. A wide selection of fiction and non-fiction will be available, and all proceeds will go to the Friends in their efforts to support the library. If you’re available to help out with set-up, running the sale, or clean up, contact us at 231-366-6107.

On Saturday, October 12 from 11:00 to 12:00, we will be hosting author Heather Sellers. Heather has written a number of books, including her memoir, You Don’t Look Like Anyone I Know, and will be speaking about the memoir writing process. She will also be talking about her unique Propagnosia disorder, a condition that does not allow her to recognize faces.

Finally, on Thursday, October 24 from 6:00 to 7:00, we will be having a Spooktacular Comedy Show presented by Joel Tacey, who provided our NERF event this summer. Watch Joel juggle eyeballs, get mixed up with multiplying bottles, and be shocked by an animated Frankenstein drawing. This program is free, and for kids of all ages.
